| Disclaimer: CSI: NY is property of CBS and does not belong to me. I am not making money off of its characters, just borrowing them to accomplish my evil plans. Fear me. ___________________________________ “Are you ready?” “I am now,” I heard her answer from inside. She came out of our bedroom wearing a deep blue dress, her soft curls pinned up on her head in a messy bun. I offered her my arm and she took it, drawing closer, closing the gap between us. Before I knew it, she had grabbed onto my tie – her nimble hands were like a vice – and pulled me toward her. Just as I leaned in for a kiss, she let out a laugh – a gentle, shimmering sound, like the tinkling of a bell. I would give anything just to be able to hear it once again… She covered her mouth with her hand (Why attempt to deprive us of the sweet music of your voice?), trying not to laugh. I stepped back and noticed that she, in a pair of high heels (with a designer with a name I wouldn’t recognize, let alone be able to pronounce) with her tresses piled up high on her head, now stood taller than me. She smiled her signature smile that no one else could replicate, lifted up her toned leg and hooked a finger in the counter of her right high heel. She let it drop haphazardly on the hardwood floor and repeated this with the other shoe. "So... Where were we?" I grinned and told her that we'd be late if we didn't hurry, but only after leaning down for a kiss. ___________________________________ “Tired yet?” I asked, grinning, as I watched her stop to wipe the drops of perspiration off of her brow. Going backpacking in the Catskills had been her idea – she’d suggested using a week of my accumulated vacation time to “have some fun once in a while,” so on a Saturday morning, we’d taken a cab to Penn Station with our packs, tent, and gear, and hopped on a train that would take us straight to Albany. It was sweltering that first day, and though the lush green canopy hanging high above us provided invaluable shade, the insects benefited from the humidity as much as we did from the protection from the sun. Our eyes stung as we tried to blink out the sweat and mosquitoes from behind our sunglasses. I was concerned for her – not only was she carrying a good fraction of her body weight on her back, we’d be away from the conveniences of civilized life for quite a few days. I was more than willing to cut our trip short if she started to miss the simple comforts of home. She pretended to be insulted. “Of course not,” she replied, the corner of her mouth twisting upward in a good-natured smirk. “Are you? Come on, Marine. Move it!” She marched forth, my little trooper, beckoning me to follow. That night, we lay outside of the tent next to our campfire, our sleeping pads placed side-by-side, as we watched the constellations. Cassiopeia in the north, Aquarius in the south, and Lyra, containing the brightest star of all, Vega, directly up above us (though I beg to differ). “Claire?” “Hmm?” “I… I love you.” I couldn’t see her face, but I knew that she was smiling. |
