Honoring the Fallen: A Look At NYPD Funerals

RyderBPD, the author of Nor’easter and A Friend In Need, has written for us an impeccably-detailed and emotional article in an effort to educate us about NYPD funerals. She has done a considerable amount of research concerning the topic in preparation for writing the third installment of A Friend In Need, which takes place during Angell's funeral, and has been kind enough to write a special guest entry for the blog. Please feel free to leave her a message of thanks or send her a compliment for her excellent contribution to our site.
Future blog posts will be posted underneath the featured article.

Without further ado, here is an excerpt from her article. The link to the full article can be found below.

At the stroke of ten on Wednesday, September 23rd, most of us will be parked in front of a TV--one hand clutching the remote and the other shushing anyone who even thinks about speaking during the next sixty minutes. As the opening scenes flash before our eyes, we desperately hope that we will finally be given answers to the questions that have raced through our heads all summer:

Who shot up the bar? Was anyone hit? Is the shooting connected to Angell’s death?

While all of these are pressing and valid concerns, one question has stuck in my own mind:
How will the writers honor Angell’s memory?

I first started thinking about this back in July as I began the third segment of a fan fiction piece entitled A Friend In Need. I wanted to write about Angell’s funeral, but it was very important to me to paint an accurate picture of what really takes place during such a tragic event. So I started researching real-life NYPD funerals, and quickly realized that the death of a New York City police officer is a very big deal...

Special thanks to our good friend for her contribution!

CSI: NY Shooting On Location on the Hudson

October 4, 2009
CSI: NY Blog - CSI: NY | CSI: New YorkThe cast and crew of CSI: NY are in New York City this week to film scenes from 4 different episodes this season. Gary Sinise, who gets motion sickness (Lt. Dan getting seasick? Who would have known?) talks about filming on the Hudson.
“I’m not somebody who deals well with motion, so I’ve taken my Dramamine today,” says Gary. He admits that the motion sickness drug “makes me a little bit tired, but we’re getting the stuff done that we need to do and it’s great to be back in New York shooting. The city is a big part of our show. Even though we don’t live here, we want to incorporate as much of the city as we can.”
“This trip is all about the background,” says Melina Kanakaredes. “New York is the star of our show. We really want to capture as many beautiful shots of the city as we can and interweave them into our season.” The director takes advantage the Hudson natural water traffic and prefers to film when there are boats passing by.
Melina is much more comfortable shooting on the water than Gary. She reveals that, “my first job out of college, when I moved to New York, was working for World Yacht Elegant Dining Afloat. It was my first job, to pay for the [acting]dream. I look at it as coming full circle in a very fulfilling way.”
At one point, Gary jumps aboard a New York Port Control boat to film the scene where he climbs aboard the glass cruise boat where the dead bodies are located.
“They work with us really well. Everybody’s always really supportive and friendly here,” Sinise says. Although he doesn’t know if any real cops have ever been on the show, he says, “the extras are dressed just like the cops, so you can’t tell which is which.” It's difficult to distinguish between the actors and the real members of New York's finest, so when not filming, the actors have to wear their police hats backwards or their police uniform jackets inside-out.
After filming the patrol boat scene, Sinise says, “They let me drive the boat around a little bit, which was fun.”
Neither cast member knows the complete plots of the episodes they’re filming; they are shooting scenes from scripts that haven’t been completely written.
“We always come here and have our shooting scenes, but we’re saying, ‘Okay, so what happens now? How does it go into the story?’ ” Sinise says.
“I know exactly what Stella knows. It’s almost Brechtian in a way,” says Kanakaredes, referring to the German playwright. “Like the plays, where they used to eat full meals on stage, it’s like being truly in the moment.”
