302: Not What it Looks Like - CSI: NY | CSI: New York

Original air date:
September 27, 2006

Episode recap: Three women dressed as Holly Golightly from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" rob a jewelry store and one of the managers is killed during the heist when a shotgun discharges. Across town, a mummified body is discovered during an old building's demolition. The corpse turns out to be the missing wife of a city councilman. Even though the autopsy concludes she died of natural causes, Mac believes she was murdered.

The crimes:
Crime 1: Robbed bank by Holly Golightly
Victim(s): Michael Willis, Natalie Letterman

Suspect(s): "Holly Golightly" x 3 (Natalie Letterman, Beth Larson, Dana), Eve Deming, Mosi Ghedi

Witness(es): Security guard, those in the store at the time of the robbery

Weapon(s): 12-gauge hunting weapons with no registration

Whodunit: Holly Golightly, Mosi Ghedi

Motive: Ruled an accident but happened during the commission of another felony therefore ruled felony murder

Supplementary: One of the girls (Natalie Letterman) is found dead in her apartment. The shot is ruled execution-style because she wouldn't give up her friend's names. This leads the officers to conflict diamond trader Mosi Ghedi.

Crime 2: Mummy in a building set to be demolished
Victim(s): Pauline Rayburn

Suspect(s): Matthew Rayburn, Sal Bovado

Weapon(s): Clauddagh ring

Whodunit: Matthew Rayburn

Connection the evidence:
Case 1: Holly Golightly
From the field:
  • Wigs and costumes at the crime scene
  • Witness remembers the name "Beth"
  • Tunnel proves that they had it all planned out
  • Glass without stress marks
  • Sine wave generator at Natalie Letterman's apartment

From the morgue:
  • Gun oil and pattern indicates the gun was held to her head for a long time
  • Mineral found in Natalie's eye

From the lab:
  • Blue trace gloves (Prussia blue = blueprint ink)
  • Blood on the gloves
  • Blood on the necklace (female)
  • Mineral is only found in conflict/blood diamonds
  • Match of seam pattern on Mosi Ghedi's jacket

Case 2: Pauline Rayburn
From the field:
  • part of the crime scene was destroyed

From the morgue:
  • Victim is definitely Pauline Rayburn
  • Damaged bone tissue along the jaw tissue
  • COD originally ruled natural causes (heart attack)
  • Impact on neck and jaw lead to her heart attack = ruled murder
  • Clauddagh ring imprint into sub-dermal tissue = Matthew Rayburn

From the lab:
  • Palm print on the rocking chair
  • Evidence that Pauline Rayburn's body went through significant temperature fluctuation

Turning point in the investigation:
Lack of stress marks on the glass leads Danny, Stella and Lindsay to the three college girls that planned the murder. Natalie Letterman is found dead in her apartment and the mineral leads them to the conflict diamond ring.

Adam and Mac recreate the scene to figure how how Pauline Rayburn became a mummy showing significant temperature fluctuation.

Familiar locations in NY:

Personnel issues:
Lindsay volunteers to go undercover to save the life of one of the Hollys and almost gets shot. When Danny, Stella and Flack burst in, Danny's only focus is making sure Lindsay's okay. Episode fades to black with Danny and Lindsay holding each other tightly.

Guest stars:
Claire Forlani as Dr. Peyton Driscoll (M.E.)

Best episode quotes:
(Lindsay holds up a diamond choker)
Danny: Don't even think about it, Montana.
Lindsay: This necklace is worth more than I make in a year. It's crazy.
Danny:
I don't really see what's the big deal, a diamond is just an allotrope of the element carbon.
Lindsay: (sarcastically) Spoken like a true romantic.

Hammerback: It's heads, she's yours. Can I at least watch? This is one of the best well preserved mummies I've seen in my many years as a pathologist. The environmental conditions of temperature and humidity and ventilation must have been just optimal! One could only compare it to the best sex you've ever had reaching climax at exactly that precise...
Peyton: Alright Sid, you can help. But I get to print her.

(Danny walks into the lab carrying a small dog and Hawkes laughs at him)
Danny:
What?
Hawkes: (laughing) Well you know what they say about dogs and their owners? The resemblance is uncanny.
Danny: Yeah, it's funny, it's funny He's a loner.
Hawkes: You know, Danny I always imagined you with something meatier.
Danny: He's a loaner.
Hawkes: (still laughing) Sure he is.
Danny: I'll be in reconstruction, you clown.

this was one of my favorite episodes I love the action and also how Danny shows his love for Lindsay by rushing in first to see if she is all right
